The Mac client offers only four configurable settings: you can set the VPN to connect automatically when you sign into macOS, allow or block LAN communications, turn the kill switch on and off, and specify applications or IP addresses (but not ports) to be blocked whenever the VPN isn’t connected. While searching for security- and privacy-improving extensions, users may end up installing an extension that is counterproductive to their goals. Unfortunately, this versatility doesn’t extend to other platforms. It’s even possible to set up multihop connections, to obfuscate your location at the expense of performance. You can set the VPN to automatically activate when you connect to an untrusted network, and set up connection rules so that certain applications, IP addresses or network ports are always blocked when the VPN is inactive – while others always bypass the VPN and use your regular ISP connection. This opens two tabs of easy-to-understand options (plus an informational “About” tab), including settings for the auto-connect feature and a toggle for the kill switch that blocks all internet access if the VPN connection is lost. The final view is the Settings page, accessed by clicking the cog icon in the top corner of the Malwarebytes Privacy window. And new subscriptions start off with a seven-day free trial, so you can cancel during your initial trial period by simply flicking a switch on the website. On the plus side, it’s reassuring to see that the company offers a long 60-day money-back guarantee. It feels like a gratuitous inconvenience, considering the likes of Atlas VPN, IPVanish and Surfshark just let you use as many devices as you want. So, for example, if you have the software running on your desktop and want to hop onto a laptop, you have to log into the Malwarebytes website and deregister the first PC before you can activate the second. And be aware that the device counts don’t just limit simultaneous connections – they restrict how many devices the software can be working on at any one time. We’re not sure that’s a great deal, though, since Malwarebytes Premium isn’t one of the security suites we recommend.Įven if you stick with just the VPN, the price is higher than most rival services, especially if you compare two- or three-year deals. There’s also the option of buying Privacy VPN and Malwarebytes Premium antivirus together in a bundle, costing $60 for a single device, $80 for three or $100 for five. The selection will work just fine for most people, but it feels a bit limited when ExpressVPN presents a choice of 94 nations around the world, and HMA offers a staggering 210 countries. The server list is also modest, running to 42 countries, mostly in Europe and North America. There’s no companion browser extension, either: the setup routine does offer to install a plugin for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, but this is only for blocking ads and trackers. For one thing, the software is only available for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS – there’s no native support for Chromebooks or Amazon Fire TV devices, for example, nor can you set up the Malwarebytes VPN on your router. When you’re connected, your online activity appears to come from a different location, and can’t be traced back to you.īeing a relative newcomer, Malwarebytes Privacy isn’t quite as developed as its rivals. Like all VPNs, Malwarebytes Privacy encrypts your network traffic and forwards it anonymously through one of the company’s secure servers. Malwarebytes is best known for its antivirus software, but since 2020 it’s also been running its own VPN.
